Adopting a TSCR Dog

Choosing to add a pet to your family is a big step! Pets add lots of laughter, fun, and companionship to our lives, but they are also a big responsibility.

There are many factors to consider before adopting a dog, such as your lifestyle, personality, financial situation, and housing situation. If you’re considering adopting a dog, you may want to ask yourself a few questions:

  • Why do I want a dog?
  • Do I have time for a dog?
  • Is my living situation stable and suitable for a dog?
  • Do I have the means to care for a dog properly?
  • Can I commit myself to a dog for the rest of its life?
  • Can I cope with the changes that a dog will bring to my lifestyle?
  • Are others in my life ready to accept a dog into the family?
  • Is the dog that I’m considering the best fit for me and my family and our lifestyle?

If you’ve answered these questions and feel that adding one of our dogs to your family is the next step, please read our Adoption Procedures below and fill out our Adoption Application.

Also, take a look at our Dogs in Program page and make sure to note each dog’s designation. Adoptable means that we’re still actively looking for the right person/family for the dog. Pending Adoption means that we’ve matched the dog with an adopter; you may still apply for a dog who is Pending Adoption, as adoptions sometimes fall through, but please understand that the dog is most likely unavailable.

Also, please note that all of our rescue dogs are fostered in private homes. By policy, we require an approved Adoption Application before sharing details about foster home locations and/or scheduling meet-and-greets.

TSCR is constantly processing intakes and adoption applications, so a dog that is listed on our website may have a pending adoption by the time that your application is approved. Don’t worry! We’ll continue to work with you to find your next canine family member.

All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and checked for other health problems prior to adoption. In order to continue our rescue efforts and help more dogs, we do require an adoption donation, which varies in cost depending on the age and health of the individual dog as well as their veterinary costs.

Adoption Procedures

  • Browse our Dogs in Program page.
  • Fill out our online Adoption Application within 30 days of when you’ll be ready to adopt (i.e., bring your adopted dog home).
  • A TSCR representative will contact you generally within 72 hours to schedule an interview. To expedite the process, please notify your veterinarian that we will be contacting them and that they have your permission to speak with the TSCR representative. TSCR does not use an 800, 888, or 877 area code, so if you have submitted an Adoption Application and see a call from an area code mapping to one of our service states, that very well may be a call from a member of our Adoption Team. Please answer the call or check your voicemail.
  • We will do a home visit whenever possible, and you will need to provide pictures or videos of your home and yard.
  • We cannot complete an Adoption Application until the above items have been completed.
  • Once your Adoption Application has been reviewed by the Adoption Team, you will be notified of the approval or denial. If there is a good match for you with a dog currently in our program, we will place you in contact with the dog’s foster family.  If not, you will be placed on our waitlist for consideration as other dogs enter our program and become available.
  • If you have been on our waitlist for 6 months or more, please complete a new Adoption Application. It’s essential that our Adoption Team has up-to-date information on all adoption candidates, and quite a lot can change in 6 months’ time.
  • If you find another dog in the interim, please contact TSCR to let us know so that we can remove you from our waitlist.
  • Arrangements for visiting/adopting the dog will be made by the Adoption Coordinator and the foster home.
  • Adoption fees can either be paid online via our website or with a check, which may be written at the time of adoption. (Writing the check saves TSCR a 3% processing charge for the online payment. Please know that as our rescue is staffed 100% by volunteers, it may take some time for us to cash your check.)
  • Please check your spam/junk email folder to ensure that any emails from TSCR are not missed!

Note: Adopters should only pay the adoption fee for their new rescue dog after the entire adoption application review and interview process has been completed—and they have received written confirmation from an Adoption Team member that they have been approved to adopt the dog.
